Just wrap the film up with the frustration and loss and bafflement of the couple, who are left simple to wonder what they did wrong. The scenes where DeNiro is acting out his delusions were just incredible.
I couldn’t help but see some of Donald Trump in Pupkin. His petty grievances; his desire not to get played (“Better to be king for a day than schmuck for a lifetime”); his assumption that what success means is to lord over people, to have them grovel and flatter and most of all, apologize, when in actuality successful people often just want to be left alone.
