The themes and setting were very fun, but the plot was a bit of a predictable ride, even for a family movie. I did like the voice acting and how the characters were written, for the most part. Regardless, Coco is special for shining light on an undersung cultural story in a way that is appreciable by all.
I watched Priscilla before I saw this, which makes the elided background story of their controversial relationship a bit more suspect. Otherwise, to a non-Elvis-fanboy, the movie was a fun guided tour through his career and the parasitic relationship he had with his manager. The Academy loves a white savior so Elvis seems a natural choice for a biopic if you wanna do numbers. I wasn't particularly moved by any of the performances, but nothing fell apart, either.
A bit messy as far as "happily ever after," but a necessary watch for us, nonetheless. Nothing hits like Tim Burton clay in October

Each movie in the Maxine saga so far has played with tone differently. X seemed like a classic slasher, Pearl was more of a slasher thriller with a bit more attention to social themes and character development, and MaXXXine seems to not fit the slasher glove much at all. Ti West seemed more focused on showcasing and glorifying old Hollywood here, with montages of street life, the night stalker cameo, the golf cart ride through the studio, the Bates Motel…
