  can’t believe Victor Lazslo and Ilsa Lund invented “I love you”/“I know” thirty-eight years before The Empire Strikes Back
  
  so many good things about this film, but the thing that truly makes me lose my mind over it is that it was filmed and released during WWII. these events were unfolding in real time, and many of the actors themselves had recently fled Nazi Germany or Vichy France. those emotions during “La Marseillaise” were very, very real.

  I’ve grown up on this musical, quite literally: my mom was pregnant with me when she and my dad performed as Martha Jefferson and the Courier, respectively, in a production of it at Constitution Hall.   shoutout to the guy in the row in front of us who had clearly been dragged to see this and was on his phone in the beginning, but then when the last shot faded to black and the credits started rolling let out a “what? no!!”
