The Holdovers 2023
First time actually watching this during Christmas, and it’s an instant holiday favorite. These unexpectedly pure friendships are a joy to watch, and I don’t think the soundtrack could have been any better. It’s reminiscent of the Breakfast Club + Dead Poets Society without being a carbon copy of the formula. I got to show it to the fam, and I can see this becoming a tradition in our house.

This isn't gonna be very polished, but here goes. One thing I noticed throughout the film is that during scenes when Lou is researching cases, watching his film on TV, staking out a scene, or showing footage to the station, even in the ending scene, the score is often very upbeat and seems to frame Lou as an up and coming hero, even though his actions are shifty and conniving. He will sink to any level and step on anyone…

Not to be basic but…“My life is full because I know that I am loved”
The performances, especially John Hurt’s, are fantastic and absolutely bring Merrick’s story to life. It was told with such heart and in such good taste when it could’ve easily been taken a totally wrong direction. I love how Lynch told it so simply with a few extravagant scenes here and there, really made the big moments feel that much more important.
