art is a tool for resistance and liberation. it’s rare to see mainstream media that offers a platform for currently/formerly incarcerated folks to share their experiences during incarceration. the inmate-founded, community-funded RTA program at Sing Sing — a maximum-security men’s prison just north of NYC — provides a space where incarcerated folks can cultivate care and build community resilience through theater. I was so happy to see the ownership former RTA members had over this project — from playing themselves to writing, directorial, and production credits. centering the voices, writing, and art of people who have interacted with the carceral system is paramount to abolition.
