maybe this is what happens when our life is no longer our own. where we only live life out of pure obligation to someone else. we play a role. this role requires us to act only in the way we are supposed to. how mundane is that? there is no chaos, no emotion. every day is the same routine. but instead each day we try to make it a little different from how it was the day before. we do…

I've Heard the Ammonite Murmur 1992
I wonder if we could have the same dream.
Watching without subs does not do this film justice, which is why I came back for a revision of my old review. Isao's early works play around a lot with silhouettes, light, and body movement; in-which you can see each of these concepts used to the fullest extent within this film. It practically feels like a dream, where you feel gratified, but also forlorn. Time doesn't exist in a space like…

Surface of Memory, Memory on Surface 1999
memories of remembrance.
a constructed yet distorted view of life within celluloid. a collage of frames that represent memories lost towards time and recollection.
a hyperfixation within the eye of the camera, the eye of memory. memories are vague and hazy fragments that only encapsulate what we deem important. what we know is what makes us who we are today. we never remember the moments nor people that did not cause a change within us. I like to believe that memories are moments where our lives caused for a redirection; an adjustment of fate.

The Underground Water 1996
you’re in a room with an open window. this is your television. the wind, rain, and bustling traffic is your sole entertainment. your movie night treats are cigarettes and water bottles. time seems to flow around you but not within you. everyone has an objective in life except for you. the gaze of nature and infrastructure stops you in your tracks long enough to induce tranquility. this is a peaceful time. within those four walls is your sanctuary; completely devoid of the time and life passing right by.

Girl Orphee 2001
a dream of ecstasy. bewitched by tonality and illusion.
almost angelic. light fills up the screen and our soul. it is so transient, so unfathomable.
a place where we can not reach, yet a place we can imagine. this place is meant to be secluded, like one’s own private sanctuary; their eden.Translated from by -
Maya 1979
I have never viewed the elements in such a way in my life. Almost like they transcended into higher forms with every passing moment.
Parvaneh as the focal point helped enhance the senses to the viewer. I felt like I could smell, taste, and feel everything captured audibly and visually from her perspective.
It was like I was there... In every scene, I felt like I was being swallowed whole by the screen.
It almost felt like Teo was inviting me into his film, where I could become apart of it; soul and mind alike. Truly a spectacle to behold..Translated from by
