I’m a fountain of blood/ in the shape of an NB
I’m way too generous on here
Saw this as part of the Obayashi retrospective. This is a film about teens at the cusp of adulthood contending with authoritarianism/fascism entering their world through the guise of cram schools and student counsels. Obayashi has a wonderful ability to fully lean into his more gonzo (and admittedly inspired) sensibilities, all the while remaining incredibly earnest, and maintaining an air of innocence amidst some pretty dark themes. It’s ridiculous how well those kids acted (especially Mitamura and Takamizawa) against those janky special effects. The end result is quite charming.
