  The earliest and most "normal" Hadžihalilović I have seen so far. Morality play dressed up as '70s sexploitation flick, or vice versa. Gorgeous, uncomfortable and perfectly paced. Hadžihalilović's idiosyncratic fairy tale feel is limited to a few explicit literary references. Plays around with some social commentary on prejudice and hypocrisy.

  Fantasy Challenge 2025

  Visually playful dark thriller with slight fantastical elements about some Mexican street kids going up against the big bad wolf in the form of a corrupt politican with ties to the cartel. Some truly harrowing imagery, yet a tad too sentimental for this old hardened heart.

  Finishing off this March Around the World with a real banger. I thought Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers was incendiary, but this... this is explosive! Pontecorvo clearly borrowed a bunch from this Egyptian precursor…
