oh the troubled days and emotional turmoil of teenage years! this movie doesn't (re)invent anything new but it's deeply earnest and accurate in its portrayal both of the era and the characters. i didn't grow up asian in the united states and i was already a little over 20 by 2008 but it's hella nostalgic and easily relatable. by the end credits, i was a little teary but with a smile on my face

The pain from losing a loved one never really goes away, you just learn to live with the wound grief carves in you. You go through life's motions & you think you've moved on but it takes one quiet moment, the sudden sound of a bicycle bell, a walk by a familiar street, a distant stare into the sea or simply doing nothing, only left to your thoughts. The pain of loss like a phantom light, flickers and calls out to you, some days louder than the others, and the heart always wanders back to it.

I wish the movie followed the book a little more closely, especially Ji-young's childhood and teen/young adult days. It was very important to understand how and why Ji-young ended up the way we see her. The focus on the present her as mom and wife, where everything admittedly culminates, took the attention a little from the core issues (some reviews said this is about postpartum depression and like yes but also no) and how it's all been accumulating for far…
