An exhibition that displays every human emotion through the fear of "what is" the love of "what can be" and the comedy that comes from trying to grapple with it all at once.
A big pot of stew of thematic elements that always interest me deeply as well as a visual language that I don't think could ever get old. So funny without sacrificing itself. How did he do it? I loved this shit, I cant imagine seeing it for the first time not in a theater.

Turning fascists into bumbling weirdo idiots is always going to be a fun way to disarm them of some of their power. Especially because the depictions, though exaggerated, are always accurate.

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song 1971
Evocative and raw in a way that is aided, not hindered, by its unconventional methods of filmmaking.
The bold and radical imagery was an affront on American ideals then and now. The editing and visual style is antagonistic to traditional filmmaking wisdom and Sweetback is less of a character and more of someone to relate to and root for and there is a tragedy in that but theres also hope. A world so marred by hatred should have every facet…
