This film is a very fun and entertaining watch. The story is not an original idea; however, the humorous twist they put on the love/rescue narrative makes it enjoyable. This film took my breath away. I could not look away from the screen due to a combination of terror and intrigue. This was a horror film made about beauty standards of women in Western society focused on how society casts a gaze on women’s beauty as they age. This gaze can be seen in full effect through the cinematography. The Substance is filled with scenes that will horrify you, bring tears to your eyes, and break your heart.

It is clear that John Cho and everyone involved is a fan of the original musical because of the amount of detail of and care that went into creating this film. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s choice to sing their songs live showed the level of mastery of their craft. This film has so many layers that cannot all be covered in detail in one review. It touches…
