  Interesting to think about what changes between this and Network - two movies about the lure of tv populism in the age of mechanical reproducibility. From 2025 this clearly seems like the more prescient vision, which is sad because Elia Kazan lives in the world of the fat heartless ego.  Is the absolute contempt for the crowd an apology or an excuse for his collaboration with HUAC?   If you hate the prison system, love buttery toast, and long to mope about in whining dependence surrounded by gorgeous scenery while your wittier life partner adoringly bullies you and fixes your mistakes, boy is this the movie for you.

  I can’t think of any metric by which this movie could have been worse.  Somehow unwatchably boring despite the incoherent weirdness, and without a doubt the most terrible music I’ve ever heard.  The exact amounts of bad in every category that achieve an agonizing viewing experience without once sliding into being interesting, fun, or memorable.  Like it was written by the world’s most tedious person after they were kidnapped and held away from humanity for twenty years so they forgot how people talk or think or act or how music works, but stayed super boring.  God I hated this movie.
