Schindler's List has been in its cellophane wrap ever since I bought it some eight years ago. You know what you're getting into with this one. The horrors of it. The emotional flagellation dolled out over three hours. Why submit to that? Well, to answer this, I'm reminded of the time I finally watched Fincher's Zodiac, and bemoaned how I had come to it so late, only for my friend to tell me "Not waited too long. Watched it at…

Sure. Not sure what else I expected, but the Big Bang Theory-ification of pop culture is on full display here, by which I mean the film is littered with Easter eggs and inside-jokes, but also feels the need to point out how uncool and nonsense everything is instead of just having real fun with the material. A wink to the audience is fine once or twice, but do it too often and it just looks like you’re asleep at the wheel.

Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road

    ★★

The Xmas slot is a time for Doctor Who to operate at its most populous - aka, the most thankless job from a writer’s perspective. You don’t get to be terribly clever. You don’t get to be inventive. If you do put together something good, you’re not going to get a ton of praise for it. You get to be big and loud and hope that it stirs enough of a chord that people will come back in five months…
