Schindler's List has been in its cellophane wrap ever since I bought it some eight years ago. You know what you're getting into with this one. The horrors of it. The emotional flagellation dolled out over three hours. Why submit to that? Well, to answer this, I'm reminded of the time I finally watched Fincher's Zodiac, and bemoaned how I had come to it so late, only for my friend to tell me "Not waited too long. Watched it at…

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion 1997
1996: in the midst of spiralling clinical depression and a sea of production issues, legendary director Hideaki Anno opts to turn the two-part finale of his dense sci-masterpiece, Neon Genesis Evangelion, into a 40 minute metaphorical head trip; abruptly disconnecting it from any sense of reality to deliver a treatise on the importance of connections, self-acceptance, and why it's okay to go on living.
So, obviously, he received death threats for it.
It's tempting, then, to see The End of…

Amadeus 1984

On 4K at last! Miracle of miracles.
F. Murray Abraham gives one of my favourite performances ever. He’s mostly just listening, processing and reacting whilst Mozart caterwauls through life. But you can read everything on his face - the jealousy, the defensiveness, and also the joy. This film is nothing without the notion that Salieri’s hatred is born out of admiration.
Much has been made of the scene where Mozart dictates to Salieri on his death bed as the ultimate…

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2023
Sure. Not sure what else I expected, but the Big Bang Theory-ification of pop culture is on full display here, by which I mean the film is littered with Easter eggs and inside-jokes, but also feels the need to point out how uncool and nonsense everything is instead of just having real fun with the material. A wink to the audience is fine once or twice, but do it too often and it just looks like you’re asleep at the wheel.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi 2017

Contains Spoilers for The Mandalorian's finale, which I didn't like. But if you did, then that's cool.
It's been a weird old time for this Last Jedi lover. I thought Disney's nostalgia-indebted mega slate of upcoming Star Wars shows was going to be the most exhausting part of the week, but apparently my naivety doth strike again. Occasionally you can feel so apart from the discourse that you question your own sanity, and watching the rapturous response to The Mandalorian's…

Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road 2023
The Xmas slot is a time for Doctor Who to operate at its most populous - aka, the most thankless job from a writer’s perspective. You don’t get to be terribly clever. You don’t get to be inventive. If you do put together something good, you’re not going to get a ton of praise for it. You get to be big and loud and hope that it stirs enough of a chord that people will come back in five months…
