The concept of chronologically staggered scenes each BEGINNING with a cliffhanger or major piece of information is genius and Nolan executed it like it was obvious. What a director.
The fallibility of memory is such an interesting but frustrating concept to me, and Memento masters it. It covers the accidental human capacity for error while also covering the subconscious lies we tell ourselves to make our life experience a bit easier. Loved this movie
Truly beautiful. I really believe that this movie would stand on its own to an audience that isn't familiar at all with the Irish Civil War allegory.
The themes of turbulent brothers, unnecessary violence, and what we're willing to sacrifice or be punished with to find peace are equally as relevant to anybody. Not to mention the briefer insights into some of my favourite topics in film: Life-versus-Legacy and Niceness-versus-Greatness. The commentary on Irish history isn't what makes this movie a 5/5, it is what makes this one of my favourite pieces of art I've ever experienced.
