Pretty stressful movie. Similar viewing experience to watching reality TV — mostly pure cringe, then an uncomfortable feeling somewhere between rooting for and hating the characters. I had not seen this movie when I watched “The Joker”, but now appreciate some of the intertextual references in that movie to this one.
A few particularly great shots and very funny scenes — especially liked a Barry Lyndon-esque candlelit sequence toward the end.
Jerry Lewis sorta steals the show playing a very deadpan version of himself.

Very boring, fell asleep in the last 20 minutes lol George Lucas imagines a dystopian techno-fascist-pharma-capitalist future where the only black people are holograms starring in VR pornos and comedy shows. One of the black holograms manages to escape the matrix only to land himself in prison, where he gets roped into helping the movie’s erstwhile protagonist Robert Duvall escape. As soon as the shit hits the fan, however, Robert Duvall abandons the hologram to the robocops and takes off…
Very weird movie. Noir melodrama — basically a romantic comedy that takes a few sharp turns into a revenge thriller. Ida Lupino and Jean Gabin star, but Thomas Mitchell (first male triple crown winner) sorta steals the show in the second half of the movie. Fritz Lang was originally slated to direct this thing but left early in production, possibly due to him and Jean Gabin beefing over Marlene Dietrich. Oscar nominee for best cinematography.
