Gambled on this because I liked Fried Barry but it was a bad gamble. The minute I saw a production ident for Bloody Disgusting I knew I was in trouble - literally the lowest bar for anything horror related.
Street Trash has admittedly fun gore, but is basically Planet Terror with a dickhead sense of humour. Puerile bullshit and dumb vegan jokes like it’s 1990 or something.
I hate it even more because I spent money on it
The Woman starts with a terrible montage sequence that‘s a big red flag for the following 100 minutes. Pollyanna Macintosh plays a feral woods dweller, kidnapped by some boomer douche who wants to ‘civilize’ her.
The idea is sound but undermined by McKee’s extremely workmanlike direction: place item in frame, shoot, rinse repeat. There’s zero style on display here, only a soap opera presentation.
It’s also let down by sub-par acting and some very strange story choices, including the inclusion…
Tedious drivel trying to cop some genre cred by chucking in Udo Kier and some way-too-late-in-the-game gore. Crap dialogue, excruciating performances and a barely comprehensible plot.
And hey MIFF, where’s this ‘healthy nod to John Carpenter’? In the 30 seconds of synth on the soundtrack?
