Rebel Ridge 2024
I feel like this movie had something it wanted to say, but it either didn’t convey it strongly enough, or lost it along the way.
I really missed Saulnier’s penchant for well-curated violence that was so present in his previous films. Instead, when it comes to this films “big showdown” it feels tame, like a whimper, rather than an explosion. Maybe that was the point? But it didn’t make particularly exciting viewing, especially at a 2 hour runtime.
I was genuinely excited to see what Saulnier did next, especially after Blue Ruin and Hold The Dark, but this felt like a step backwards, if not sideways.

Late Night with the Devil 2023
I was excited to watch this film, thought the trailer looked great, but as the credits rolled I felt something was missing.
I believe what that missing factor was, was nuance in the storytelling, a “show don’t tell” philosophy. The film opened with an extensive exposition dump about the main character and I feel that if you’ve seen a lot of films, read a lot of books, you can essentially guess the plot from there.
