Carlito’s Way feels like the work of a madman. De Palma is firing on all cylinders. Al Pacino gives an all-timer insane performance. The tracking shots in this are absolutely bonkers, and there’s hardly a gratuitous frame in the 144 minute runtime.

The Spirit of the Beehive 1973
I can’t think of a more beautifully shot film. The rich honeyed colors and golden hour shots are breathtaking. Erice blurs the line between the real and imaginary better than any other with his profoundly simple take of a child’s point of view. I can’t believe he his fascist Spanish government let this slip past the censors, despite its anti-Franco message, because they thought it would be too boring for audiences to want to watch. Well, it turns out, fascists don’t have very good taste in movies!

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2023
I personally cannot wait for this style of sarcastic meta-ironic humor to go out of style.

Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World 2023
Postmodern leftist cinema at its finest. A cathartic watch for anyone burnt out by our extremely online rise and grind capitalist culture. What a genius idea to juxtapose footage from a 1981 film shot at many of the same locations.
