The Lost Daughter 2021
Obvs Elena Ferrante is a literary goddess. But Maggie's directorial debut is extremely impressive, I thought. She manages to capture a feeling of relentless unease throughout; the cockroach on the pillow, the confrontation with the possibly mafia family on the beach, the threat of violence that lingers thereafter.
The pacing is restrained, glacial, but somehow enthralling. The screenplay is spare and confident - favouring image and action over dialogue and telling.
