Jia Zhangke knows how to make a slice of life film. Also, the most iconic use of the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West” in a cinematic context.
Wanted to love this so much — and I did, up until the third and final act. This film sputtered through the last 45 minutes. Couldn’t even watch without bursting into laughter — disjointed, horribly acted, comically stripped of anything resembling the first two acts.
