I love Masaaki Yuasa and a couple other things.
That’s about it.
I like how the whole last stretch of the musical is red herrings to show other potential cats that could get picked instead of Grizabella. So like, you’ve got Gus the theater cat who is this old legend of a cat so it makes sense why they might chose him. Or Magical Mr. Mistoffelees who literally saves Old Deuteronomy so he could get chosen too. But the last red herring candidate is just Skimbleshanks because he’s goated, rides the train, and has the best song and I just think that’s neat. Truly a show carried by its hype moments and aura but in a good way.
Didn’t expect this to get to me as much as it did. Judged objectively as a documentary, it’s ok. They definitely give the dad too much of a pass and the way they ended with a happy montage of the old videos felt pretty distasteful but it was certainly well put together for the most part. But man, as someone who grew up Mormon and is so familiar with all the dynamics shown off here, this left me feeling physically ill by the end. There’s a deep sickness in this state and this shows the worst possible outcome of it.
