blur: To the End 2024
We laughed and we sobbed (a lot). Damon Albarn, they could never make me hate you.

Baby Reindeer 2024
Breaking my hiatus briefly to say I had a visceral reaction to this show. Anchored with a heartbreaking Richard Gadd at the centre, an outstandingly complex Jessica Gunning and terrific supporting turns from Nava Mau and Tom Goodman-Hill, this study of a man’s complicated dreams of stardom while going through a living hell hit home so much closer than I ever expected. Gadd’s deeply raw monologue where he says hating himself was his greatest love and his needs for attention…

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2021
An exciting and bold delve into new pastures of the MCU. Cretton uses the character driven plots of his previous successes - Short Term 12 and Just Mercy - to establish sympathetic and likeable characters. Simu Liu as Shang-Chi is a great addition to the universe in his first major Hollywood film role, while Awkwafina is brilliant as always delivering the comedic beats as best friend Katy. While a surprise return, Ben Kingsley is delightful in his return as Trevor Slattery…

Jackie 2016
A truly haunting and sobering portrait of grief expertly brought together by Natalie Portman at her finest - this should have won her a second Oscar. She captures Jackie Kennedy’s grief in every frame perfectly and is utterly magnetic in every scene, however the supporting turns from Crudup, Sarsgaard, Gerwig and especially Hurt are brilliant. With glorious costumes and a chilling score from Mica Levi, both well deserving of their Oscar nominations, it’s the cinematography from Stephane Fontaine that captures the heart of the story. While a hard watch to stomach, it is exceptional in its story-telling.
