Failed writer, so-called doctor, disenchanted academic. I used to write about movies, now I only watch them.

The Eclipse: Courtship of the Sun and Moon 1907
We're so lucky to have the entire history of a medium in our fingertips.

The Brutalist 2024
Their world erected from the ground up by the Other, and still they don’t want them. No credit given, no acknowledgment shown. Resentment is the oppressor’s way of coping with his helplessness. But the monuments built by that the Other are all over, watching, mocking, even pitying the oppressor.
Quite a wonderful film really.

White Heat 1949
A great character study, building up not to any heist in particular, but to Cody's mother's death. That's where the film really begins, propelling our protagonist toward all-out lunacy. After he's out of prison, the heist he plans out isn't so much a means to success, but a means through which he can die and join his mother again.
After all the build-up, only at this juncture does White Heat up the ante; only then does it become a study…

All of Us Strangers 2023
Watched it with the girlfriend, the mom, and the best friend (who happens to be gay). Best friend fell asleep; girlfriend began playing with the number “3” of a birthday balloon, and mom — after watching closely for eighty minutes — got up and said to me, my sleeping best friend and girlfriend playing with balloon: “Call me back when he [Andrew Scott] starts to feel better.” She never came back.
Misery porn at its most egregious, buoyed by an excellent score and two wasted and magnificent performances. And goddamn the awful dialogue: “It’s so quiet.”
