Hits fairly close to home, since the same happened in my country from 1973 to 1990, when the dictatorship ended. Countless lives affected by the whims of a handful of self-appointed leaders, whose deranged and savage actions don't need to be shown explicitly for the audience to grasp the gravity of the situation. It could've turned out exploitative in the hands of a lesser director, but Salles gets a memorable performance from Fernanda Torres, as well as from every other performer.

Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose 2023
There's a few sparks of genius in the screenplay, and some remarkable scenes. For a film that excels in weirdness, Pegg's performance still goes a step too far in the direction of overacting. Not saying it's a bad performance, I think anyone given the role would've done the same. It's a hard line to tow, I imagine.
I do believe it is a film worth watching and most importantly...worth discussing, since its overarching themes are the questions perhaps no one will ever answer. Do you believe in Gef...or do you wish you believed in Gef?Translated from by -
