i think this is one of the most devastating movies i’ve ever seen. i don’t think i can ever watch this again. but i hope to remember it forever.
by the way, the native title 「地久天长」 means enduring while the the world lasts. contextualized with this film, it’s a poignant and sobering idiom to describe grief.
for a documentary telling the story of taiwan new cinema, too much of its runtime is bogged down by the meandering praise of hou and yang. only a few interviews cut deeply and directly about the significance of taiwan new cinema and the context of its films.
it’s also a crime to talk so much about hou but fail to mention his writing partner chu t’ien-wen.
this is something i definitely needed, a nicely paced film that heals you
ultimately, this film is a mirror. you can only receive as much as you’re willing to give. don’t pay too much mind to the characters’ unorthodox decisions, appreciate the camerawork, ignore how much movie is left and simply fall into it.
what can be realized can only be met by how you walk alongside the characters.
