    i think this is one of the most devastating movies i’ve ever seen. i don’t think i can ever watch this again. but i hope to remember it forever. 

    by the way, the native title 「地久天长」 means enduring while the the world lasts. contextualized with this film, it’s a poignant and sobering idiom to describe grief.

    for a documentary telling the story of taiwan new cinema, too much of its runtime is bogged down by the meandering praise of hou and yang. only a few interviews cut deeply and directly about the significance of taiwan new cinema and the context of its films. 

    it’s also a crime to talk so much about hou but fail to mention his writing partner chu t’ien-wen.
