Bambi (1942) is a beautiful animated film that struggles to fill its runtime with enough story to justify its feature length. While the coming-of-age tale has its touching moments and poetic sequences, there are far too many stretches of cute animals just being cute.
All that to say, I appreciate the artistry of the film, and the death of Bambi’s mom still hits hard over 80 years after the film’s theatrical release. However, this is not one of my favorite films from Disney’s golden age.

Narratively simple, yet thematically profound, The Straight Story is unlike any movie I’ve seen before. This Disney-Lynch team up is able to pull at your heartstrings thanks to Lynch’s masterful direction that brings the mid-western scenery to life as well as the brilliant performance by Richard Farnsworth, who carries the emotional weight of the film.
While slow paced, the film utilizes that as its advantage, giving the audience time to contemplate life the same way as Farnsworth’s Alvin. Who knew you could get emotional over a tractor.
