James Cameron is a master at the two primary genres of cinema: sinking boat and aliens. This film is a brilliant combination of the two.

(Watched this in good ol' 2D without any of that HFR stuff because I don't hate myself)

Gotta love documentary/fiction hybrid films. A revolutionary work that is also centered around a fairly compelling romance. It definitely didn't land for me in quite the same way as some other Cuban films like Soy Cuba or The Last Supper, but it's still a pretty interesting portrait of the machismo culture that remained through the post-revolution period as Cuba engaged in its gradual societal transformation. Not the strongest Bong hit but still a great time overall. He's never been a particularly subtle filmmaker, especially with his American films, but like Spike Lee that's kinda part of his charm. There's a little too much going on here, and he does sort of start to mix his metaphors in the third act, but for the most part its satire works well enough even though it could've narrowed its focus a little more. Mark Ruffalo is doing a…

Spent this Canada Day rewatching the greatest Canadian film of all time (and one of my favourite films in general). I'm so glad I randomly stumbled on this movie like a decade ago while watching a free trial of a Canadian movie channel back when Satellite TV was still a thing people had.

There's no movie even remotely similiar to this, neither from Paizs's peers in the Winnipeg Film Group nor elsewhere. It's a film that essentially created an entirely…

For nearly a decade now, Fury Road was the only Mad Max film I had seen. I finally worked my way through the other 3 films just in time for Furiosa, and in a world where every film series has turned into an expansive cinematic universe with every interesting element milked to death, it was so refreshing to watch a series so disinterested in continuity. Each film is simply a tale about some guy named Max (who may not even…
