One of the better horror/thriller films this year with a tight run time and a concept that feels a little like a religious version of Get Out. Hugh Grant is excellent as a psychotic theologian with a God complex. There’s some humour about Mormon undies and pop culture jokes but most satisfyingly it lands the plane and the last third of the film is genuinely unsettling. From mansplaining contemporary religions to unexpected jump scares, this was unexpectedly satisfying. Can A24 do no wrong?

While derivative, this is Demi Moore in full self deprecation mode. The 80s misogynist vibe, the revolting male gaze of it all, the fact that somehow in this universe televised fitness videos actually exist all make the sum of this body horror examination better than some of its clumsy parts. Make no mistake, this man is Moore in full crone mode and seemingly living the Disney villain of it all. And that ending, oof, it’s like audience participation on steroids…

What did I just watch? And why did I hoot like crazy when all monsters attacked one another in slow motion? More visual effects than plot, with enough plot holes to fall through a vortex, this is possibly the most fun you can have with your brain registering no real activity. This is why people are afraid that AI might one day write, direct and release a film. It’s real folks!

Barry Keoghan’s meat and two veg should be nominated for an Oscar. There aren’t enough plug holes or graves in this massive swing of a film from first class director Emerald Fennell. Can’t wait for Saltburn 2: Free Willy. If there was another pisstake of the upper class and white privilege this licks its plug hole.
