The Straight Story 1999
I love everything about this film. It’s the most beautiful depiction I’ve ever seen on screen of a place and time that feels most like home to me, which is a place and time I feel I’ve spent much of my life turning away from. All to say when I sat down to watch this three hours ago I didn’t realize what it would wind up meaning to me.

One thesis of the film seems to be the reasons WHY a war is happening don’t really matter, it’s simply THAT a war is happening that’s the important thing. And the civil war in Civil War is just that generic. We don’t know how the lines have been drawn, or the ideologies behind the warring parties, that all gets washed over the same way Americans might view political violence happening overseas, unable or unwilling to understand the motivations behind the events.…
