It wasn’t as good as I was expecting but it was still interesting nonetheless. In a film that shows that the Vatican is no different from any democratic government and for some reason, every pope is fluent in English, Spanish and Italian, this film is methodical and deliberate, threading a very fine balance between crisis of faith and thirst for power. It’s not the fantastic award winner that it’s made out to be but it’s beautifully directed and definitely one I’ll need to rewatch to understand it better.

Honestly, this fell slightly short of expectations but was still a decent watch. Millie Bobby Brown gave a surprisingly good performance as the lead of the movie backed up by Chris Pratt who looks and acts like Eric Christian Olsen in NCIS. The script is definitely clunky in places, surprising given the talents that wrote it, but the Russo Brothers ended up directing a really heartfelt movie with a lot to say.

This film was a much more enjoyable experience than I thought it would be. The opening sequence reminds me so strongly of Saving Private Ryan. I really like how the directing and cinematography is bold and takes chances and the fight sequences are well choreographed. Kento Yamazaki and Anna Yamada are brilliant in the lead roles and really embody their characters, bringing a new layer to them. The film is also ridiculously fun in places, especially in the Ainu meal making sequences.

I say hinna hinna to this film.

I really felt my intelligence was being insulted with this. 10 minutes in, I was bored.

Apart from one good fight scene, this film is just boring and makes no sense. You have no idea who any of the characters are nor can you invest in the story, it just feels like some sort of failed Taylor Sheridan pilot. What’s more, the pace of this film is so floppy that there are several moments where you wonder if you’ve fallen asleep and missed things.

I thought a female John Wick style story like this could be interesting… if only it was made properly.
