the main conflict mostly takes place offscreen which I didn’t really love but I can excuse that because everything else about this film appeals to me so precisely. the cinematography, the direction, and the performances all made this such a lovely and delicate film

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this film because the first hour convinced me it would a new all-time favorite. I felt like all the parts were there for a really poignant portrayal of women and girls in positions of servitude; the grandmother remaining dedicated to her dead husband to the point of holing herself up in a room at his altar, the mistress of the house silently withstanding her husband’s bad choices even as it drags them…
