The Substance 2024
I loved this movie. It perfectly exaggerates aging, denial, and the extreme lengths women will go to meet society’s beauty standards.
The mix of gory body horror with these themes made the whole concept of chasing our youth seem ridiculous. The absurdity became even more obvious when the Monstro was born— the entire last segment of the movie was so over-the-top that you couldn’t help but laugh and shake your head. “Do women really go this far?” Unfortunately, yes but highlighting this issue and sparking conversations, as this movie does, feels like a step in the right direction.
