I like when scifi pairs two completely separate ideas—in this case, the ramifications of cloning paired with humans discovering an alien species much more intelligent than they realize—and deals with both of them in the various ways their wires might get crossed. Robert Pattinson is so so so good.

Like a satire of a dream. Possessed of the same raw spirit that animated Kafka.

When later reviewers started saying “yeah it’s great but it really goes haywire at the end,” I was primed for this to be my favorite movie of all time. I love when movies escalate beyond all reasonable scope and go insane at the end. Sadly, I think Longlegs does the opposite; right when you think it’s about to go off the rails for good, it grounds its creeping unease with RULES. I wish it was far more ambiguous, but I can’t hold that against what we actually got. First two acts are untouchable, Maika Monroe is perfect, and Cage is predictably great.

This movie dares to ask “what if the first 20 minutes of The Cat Returns were stretched to feature length and also was about adolescent awkwardness, faith, suppression and repression, and NEW WAVE SYNTH ROCK”
