The Stepfather has a premise we've seen before, but that requires above average direction so that the film doesn't become tepid. It's rather inept, and the two stars are only for the thrilling climax.
Thelma is singlehandedly carried by June Squibb who brings charm and sincerity to the role. Its Squibb who brings mundane scenes to life especially during the middle act after most of the exposition is done. The supporting cast did a great job, in particular Richard Roundtree and Fred Hechinger. Clark Gregg and Parker Posey are okay. It wasn't an unpleasant viewing experience. If anything the technicolor visuals and eye-popping special effects are as good if not better than Ragnarok in some scenes.
Tonal shifts are jarring to say the least. They took the humor that worked in Ragnarok and put it on steroids. Halfway through the film, it seemed the film was becoming a parody of itself. The writing never let a serious scene marinate.
Even worse is the chemistry between Thor and Jane. It's lacking,…
