Superbly written and acted, the most striking thing about this movie is the way it invites you to laugh at the noise, the absurdity and the drama only to rip it all away and show the watcher that there was in fact nothing to laugh about.
Watching it, I dreaded a brutal comedown where perhaps the Russians tortured an agreement out of her - the reality might’ve been even worse. A quiet, hopeless, defeated reality.
The plot felt rather contrived. As soon as the new Pope arrived, it seemed obvious that he would be utterly critical to the plot - being a young, dashing Cardinal from various exotic warzones - despite there being truthfully no reason for him to be.
Lacked any kind of timelessness; repeatedly showed “modern” issues such as Islamic Terrorism, vaping, Transgenderism as though to remind us that “Hello, you are watching movie set in 2024!!” while also being jarringly anachronistic; Islamic terrorism in Europe peaked directly after the Syrian refugee crisis, for example.
Technically well made, good acting, cinematography, score.
