I think there’s an incredible sci-fi movie in here that’s held back a bit by tonal inconsistency and Mark Ruffalo’s character.
I found there to be too much zaniness throughout the first half and it just felt like it was distracting from what’s a very human story. Mark Ruffalo’s character just feels incredibly ham-fisted and over-the-top and I feel turning that performance down would have helped the movie dramatically.
That being said, the second half of the movie is quite strong and very enjoyable. Pattinson absolutely crushes his performance(s), with Naomi Ackie and Anamaria Vartolomei also putting in very enjoyable and engaging shifts.
