Excellent performances by Mary Tyler-Moore, Donald Sutherland, and Timothy Hutton. Mary Tyler-Moore maintains three-dimensionality as an emotionally repressed and repressive mother and Donald Sutherland is caught in between her and their son who desperately needs emotional support from SOMEONE after the recent death of his brother and resulting depression and attempts at self-harm. Gorgeous, subtle film. Donald Sutherland also has the most beautiful smile.
