My least favorite Eggers film, unfortunately.
As always, the attention to historical detail and folk culture is impeccable. Eggers succeeds in immersing us in the eerie, atmospheric world of Dracula/Nosferatu. Focalizing the story through Ellen was an inspired choice, but it ultimately falls short. We barely learn about Ellen beyond her "melancholy," leaving so much unexplored about her desires and agency.
