I found it very compelling how the theme tackled the many layers of Irish society at the time through the psyche of a starved nation. From the lasting effects of the famine to the religious and cultural oppression of women, the film held its own.
The execution of the opening scene's breaking the fourth wall was a bit kitsch but its recall at the end had a significantly better effect and was held thematically by its plot.
