The Color Purple 1985
Hadn’t seen this (look I spent most of my life watching really bad indie horror movies and not like classic films) and was blown away by Whoopi Goldberg. The film has some issues, especially in portraying black men but I also would argue it wasn’t treating any character as a pre presentation of an entire demographic and used domestic abuse to show the hardships of the main characters in this story.
Really wonderfully shot and acted film, I’m excited to see the 2023 version as soon as I can!Translated from by -
Eyes Wide Shut 1999
The level of unease this movie made me feel was intense-even by Kubrick standards. I was disappointed that it didn’t crescendo into a bigger climax-but I left the film feeling like that was indeed coming for the characters. That made me feel more disturbed than a climax would have, a great use of allowing the viewers imagination against them.
I’m missing a lot of Kubrick films and given the Shining is one of my favourite films of all time-my goal is to watch all of his films this year. This one didn’t meet what I was expecting-but it was effective for what it was!

A League of Ordinary Gentlemen 2004
I grew up in bowling subculture, though 5 pin bowling culture (so... bowling, but Canadian!). My parents are both professional bowlers and they put this on today
An interesting look into the decline of bowling and revitalization, which mirrors ours up here. Though our revitalization hasn’t been wildly successful, there is a lovely tight knit community up here and there is a career to be had if you have the skill. The discussion on bowling being looked at as blue…

Brie... you didn’t have to stoop to this. I feel robbed of five minutes
The last line of the film sums up it nicely - “that’s disgusting”Translated from by
