If I recall correctly Anna Kendrick stated that she doesn't want to get money from this movie but to make people see. And I think she did it beautifully by directing this film in such a way. The film doesn't really show the violence itself (in some accession only), but the fear is portrayed with perfection, it's not like a horror movie where you can get a jumpscares, it's a feeling that something bad is gonna happen even if all seems, on the outside, fine. The fear and the instinct that many people feel in dangerous situations.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004
It didn't do anything for me but I see how it could. The movie is emotional with good shots and transitions. The whole idea of erasing someone from your memory does seem appealing but as the movie shows there can be downsides to it. Knowing something is familiar but not knowing from where - makes us crazy.
