The second act makes you think we’re going in some interesting directions, but ends up being a convoluted detour to a simple third act. The killer’s philosophy makes sense in broad strokes, but his motivations within the particulars of the movie are at times frustratingly unclear.

Not a horrible movie, and certainly better than some Blumhouse garbage. There’s effort here. But I don’t think I’ll remember this one by next year.

The jumbled plot could use some tightening, but at least it’s not a complete rehash. More CGI and more aimed at kids, but not nearly at the levels my cynicism expected. If we’re judging based on the low bar of Burton’s recent work, this is a great movie.

People play fast and loose with the "dark comedy" label. Most of the parts that could have been construed as comedic unsettled me even more. It's almost impossible not to point out how similar the movie's trajectory feels to "The Witch," which certainly isn't a bad thing. There are a couple of really memorable tableau shots that call to mind old surrealist movies. Robert Eggers might be the closest thing we have to a Buñuel today, and I would love to see him get even weirder with it in the future.

    ★★

An unfocused grab-bag of human misery that's less harrowing than it is boring. All the scenes meant to be intense or shocking fall flat because we aren't invested in any of the characters, and it hits lots of themes without making a statement on anything.
