Just read the book for the first time since studying it at school. Loved the book then, loved it now, and knew this film wasn’t well regarded at all – so put off watching it in the past, but wanted to stay on Cephalonia after my re-read. The film is quite boring, quite rushed in parts, Cage is miscast. Some of the changes from the book make sense, others are quite disappointing / cowardly, dare I say it. I knew…

20th anniversary, expanded edition. Amazing comedy at times. “Come down here so we can see your shaking hands, so we can see your cowardice.”

Saw the Ultimate Cut (3hr15mins!). The intercut animated film was a unique inclusion… but jarring, and disrupted the flow of the movie. That said, I really enjoyed this. Unique approach, gritty and legitimately disturbing fights, cool soundtrack, some genuinely funny lines, opening sequence is brilliant as a word-building exercise. I tried to imagine what it’d be like as the 2.5hr theatrical cut, and I think I’d have liked it even more (but not enough to bump up the rating). I’d be interested to see how much shorter (if at all) the backstory scenes would be. What happened to Zack Snyder after this? A real shame
