On a whim, I booked a ticket for the late Sunday evening session, fully aware of the risk of dozing off. However, "A Real Pain" proved to be anything but sleep-inducing. It's not the masterpiece that the rain of Oscar nominations was hinting at but it also doesn't deserve all the hate. It's landing somewhere in between. A unique movie that is showing imperfections but also took me for an entertaining ride for 2hours and 10min and left me with plenty to think and discuss about. I didn't feel that it was a film about gender transition nor drogue cartels, rather a story about the struggle to escape a certain life, the weight of past choices and the self we sometimes wish we weren’t. The themes resonated more as a personal journey rather than a social commentary.
