Paul Mescal's and Frankie Corio's acting duet. It was perfectly choreographed and captured the communicational gaps and ambiguity as well as the mutual tenderness and affection between these two characters to great effect. I acutely felt the tension created by the questions left unanswered and the fragility of the father figure that is barely hidden by him from his daughter, but probably more obvious to the audience. in 2023 this is still a terribly accurate portrayal of a certain kind of middle class marital dynamic, contemporary in almost every aspect. the husband even remarks at one point "it was when we had that Asian flu" which to me inevitably invited parallels to covid (they are probably referring to the 1968 "Hong-Kong flu" pandemic). My attention did not falter despite the 3-hour duration and dialogue-only scenes. now excited to see how the new version will fare compared to the original.
