Thanks to my girlfriend for showing me Agnes Varda. She's super cool and actually not pretentious as I would expect a french new wave cinema director to be. I love that her whole art process is her being a kid and playing around with her reality. Very cool and endearing.
An incredible story about a mexican kid with a penchant for soccer balls and bicycles and an eccentric architect/engineer with an insurmountable will to live. Two unlikely characters overcome language and cultural barriers to form an unbreakable bond and teach humanity a moral lesson on choices and consequences.
Notable quotes:
"Jala" - Mexican Kid
"No jala" - Old Man
This feels like a choose your own adventure, thematically. I choose to dwell on the torment that consumes the artist, burdened with the task of asserting some sort of divine will over a blank canvas (in this case an unfinished cathedral/church bell). Rublev makes a great case for a man with an unmovable ideology, guided only by what feels right, but I can't help think that there might have been a tremendous amount of fear behind that first stroke of paint, buried under the guise of his religious philosophies. Also, the 35mm shots are beautiful.
