The best Godzilla movies in my opinion are the ones that have an interesting human story that can stand on its own without the inclusion of the giant destructive monster.
Godzilla Minus One is one of the best movies in the series because at its core it is a great postwar drama about a small group of Japanese civilians trying to cope with and heal from the grief and trauma caused by the war.
And then Godzilla comes in as…
Creatively told and utterly haunting. The whole audience was left emotionally drained.
Pure art. A romantic drama about the relationship of two young lovers living in Cherbourg at the height of the Algerian War. This second instalment in the fictional universe started in the film "Lola" is comprised entirely of beautifully, and hauntingly, sung dialogue. It is also clearly a major inspiration for Damien Chazelle's "La La Land".
A fun 1970s French Gangster epic with hints of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Public Enemy, and even some sequences reminiscent of The Godfather (which came out a couple of years later). Funny, violent, and tragic, this film is built on the friendship of its two charismatic leads, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon.
