Forgot to review this! A month out, high level takeaways:
Brody was fantastic and deserves best actor (though Fiennes does too and I hear Timmy T might as well).
The intermission was novel and fun, but the movie didn’t need to be that long.
First half was very good, second lost its way. Some weird scenes that didn’t work for me.
Brody telling off the architect hired to cut costs was my favorite line in cinema this year, no question.…
My new 2024 favorite. Just the right amount of foreshadowing throughout with perfect moments of sweet payoff - I was punching the air more than once.
Fiennes is perfect, and the acting was great throughout. Creative and beautiful shots abound, great costuming.
“I don’t want your vote!” “Nevertheless, you have it.” < I loved this line and it strikes me that you can substitute in a lot of different words for vote (love, respect, attitude, etc) and still get a pretty…
This movie was enjoyable but didn’t turn the corner for me to become a really memorable or great film.
From a story perspective, I felt like the thread connecting Nora and Hae Sung was too thin to merit the level of impact they had on one another. I do appreciate that you can be in love with an imaginary version of someone else, but their childhood friendship and brief online romance were thin fare to sustain a 24 year gap…
My first Kurosawa, my first Mifune. It’s cool to see a samurai movie shot like a western. It drags a bit, but overall it’s a fun movie.
I also like that it’s referenced - hilariously and subtly - in Barry, during a press conference. The police claim that Ryan Madison and Taylor pitted the Bolivians and the Chechens against each other, like Mifune in Yojimbo.
Last note - Yojimbo means bodyguard. Neat.
