Gladiator II is entertaining but mediocre at its best. It does not work as a revenge story and it's laughably bad as a political drama, but it is a good action film. It hinges so much on its star power and the nostalgia of its prequel it's cringe-inducing, and to it's detriment, as every time it's pitted against the original it only evidences it's own pitfalls.
It is ultimately an inferior film, too long, derivative and uncommitted with it's own story to be anything else but a forgettable blockbuster.
