Anchored by an incredible lead performance and excellent world building, Mickey 17 comes tantalizingly close to a great film. But an overly long first act packed with unnecessary and repeated exposition, plus an uneven tone caught awkwardly between comedy and drama, work against the stronger aspects of the film throughout.

Wild at Heart 1990
If Blue Velvet was the movie that established Lynch’s auteur voice and style of filmmaking going forward, Wild At Heart is the first film which tests that style as a formula and which showcases most clearly Lynch’s philosophy of having ‘comedy that sits next to drama.’ The oscillation between comedic ironic detachment and dramatic sincerity causes some whiplash but Lynch’s knack for indelible imagery, distinct characterizations and whimsical unexpected events ultimately delights far more than it perplexes.

Miami Vice 2006
A film both ahead of its time and distinctly of its time. There are many narrative, acting and pacing flaws but the standout early digital cinematography and enormous budget creates a uniquely gritty and hyperrealistic tone, while somehow never losing cinematic artful composition thanks to Mann’s A+ eye. Miami nights have never felt this visceral.

Overcomes the contrivance of its premise with focus and intensity in execution.
